Not so fast, though. Moncton scored in the opening minute of the third period, then added goals at 4:43 and 11:44 to tie the score and ultimately force overtime.
Rookie Kyle Farrell picked an auspicious time to score his first goal as an Axeman, netting the winner at 2:12 of the extra period.
Farrell, a 42-goal scorer for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles last season, broke out two-on-one with Zach Franko, and instead of passing, elected to shoot and beat Moncton goalie Brandon Thibeau to give the Axemen the win.
Captain Mike Cazzola opened the scoring for Acadia with his first of two goals on the night, at 2:07 of the second period on assists from Michael Clarke and Brett Thompson.
Dylan Anderson made it 2-0 at 15:10, with Remi Giftopoulos and Clarke picking up assists. Cazzola then scored at 17:19, assisted by Boston Leier and Farrell, to give the Axemen a three-goal bulge.
Moncton started its comeback with a goal by Victor Beaulac after just 46 seconds of the third period. Alex Saulnier made it 3-2 four minutes later, and Mitchell Robillard tied the score with 8:16 left on the clock.
The remainder of the third period was scoreless.
Acadia had a 14-13 edge in shots in the first period, a 15-9 advantage in the second, and somewhat surprisingly, an 11-4 bulge in the third. The Axemen then had all three shots in the overtime period for a 43-26 advantage overall.
Thibeau, Cazzola and Farrell were chosen the game's three stars.
Acadia is back on home ice Oct. 14 for its second game of the Homecoming weekend, a 7 p.m. start with the St. Thomas Tommies providing the opposition.
