Atwater, who would have played his third season with the junior Wildcats in 2015-2016, said Sept. 10 that he would like to get into police college in the future.
Atwater joined the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department back in May.
“If policing doesn’t work out, I would like to continue to be a firefighter, and apply for fire school and extend my career as a paid firefighter,” he added.
Junior Wildcats’ head coach and general manager Nick Greenough said, while Atwater’s departure “is a big loss for our team,” he respects Atwater’s decision and wishes him well in his new career path.
Greenough said the Wildcats appeared to “have lots of depth” on the blueline, with newcomers Vytal Cote, Matt Nosella and Anthony Lafond joining holdovers Austin Harding, Brandon Worthen, Dane Moore and team captain Nick Gibson.
“There will be a spot here (for Atwater) if he should change his mind,” Greenough added.
