The Peter Connell Memorial girls’ hockey tournament will take place Dec. 27-28 at the Kings Mutual Century Centre in Berwick.

The event, in at least its eighth year, is named for the late Peter Connell, a former Central Kings coach, one of the pioneers of girls’ hockey in Kings County and a long-time advocate for female hockey prior to his death in December, 2004.

On Jan. 2-3, the Horton Griffins will host the Fred G. Kelly boys’ hockey tournament at the Andrew H. McCain Arena in Wolfville. The long-running tournament is back in Wolfville for a second year after being held in Berwick in 2011 and 2012.

The event is named for Major Fred Kelly, a varsity coach and athletic director at Acadia for more than 40 years.

The tournament, normally held over two full days, has had several formats over its more than 30-year history, depending on the number of teams in the field.

This year’s event will feature six teams. Barrington, NKEC and Ecole Par en Bas (from Yarmouth County) will play in the Wells Division. Horton, Central Kings and Hants East will make up the Kelly Division.

According to Greg Byrne, head coach of the host Griffins, the tournament has been scheduled around two practice sessions for the Acadia hockey Axemen.

The Acadia practices were left as part of the schedule, Byrne said, “in case any of the teams might be interested to watch them practice.” The Axemen are currently the #5-ranked university men’s hockey team in the country.

Action gets underway at 8 a.m. Jan. 2, with games following at 9:45 and 11:30. The Axemen will practice between 1:15 and 3:15, after which the tournament will continue with games at 3:30 and 5:15.

The opening ceremonies will take place at 7 p.m., followed at 7:15 by a game between Horton and NKEC that has become a tournament tradition for that time slot, and is usually well-attended by students and staff from both schools.

Action Jan. 3 once again gets underway bright and early, at 8 a.m., with the final two round robin games, as was the case on Friday, at 9:45 and 11:30.

This time, the Axemen will practice from 1:15 to 2 p.m. The cross-over semifinals are then set for 2:15 and 4 p.m.

To prevent the possibility of a team having to play back-to-back games without a break in-between, a Horton hockey alumni game (another tournament tradition) is scheduled for 6 p.m., followed by the championship game beginning at 7:15.

The full tournament schedule is as follows:

Jan. 2              8 a.m.              Central Kings vs. NKEC

                      9:45 a.m.        Par-En-Bas vs. Horton

11:30 a.m.      Barrington vs. Hants East

                       1:15 p.m.        Hockey Axemen practice (2 hours)

3:30 p.m.        Barrington vs. Central Kings

                       5:15 p.m.        Par-En-Bas vs. Hants East

                        7 p.m.              Opening Ceremonies

                        7:15 p.m.        Horton vs. NKEC

Jan. 3                8 a.m.              Central Kings vs. Par-En-Bas

                        9:45 a.m.        Horton vs. Barrington

11:30 a.m.      NKEC vs. Hants East

                        1:15 p.m.        Hockey Axemen practice (45 minutes)

                        2:15 p.m.        Semifinal 1 (1st Wells vs. 2nd Kelly)

                        4:30 p.m.        Semifinal 2 (1st Kelly vs. 2nd Wells)

                        6 p.m.              Alumni Game

                        7:15 p.m.        Championship Game

The hockey Axemen have no exhibition games scheduled over the holidays. Acadia will kick off the second half of its schedule Jan. 3 at Dalhousie, and is next at home Jan. 9 against Saint Mary's.

The junior A Wildcats are next in action Jan. 2 when they host Truro in a 7 p.m. start. The Wildcats then host Woodstock in a 7 p.m. start Jan. 3, with both games at the Kings Mutual Century Centre in Berwick.

The midget AAA Wildcats have no home games scheduled for over the holidays. The Kings Mutual AAA bantams are next in action Jan. 3 when they host Pro Hockey Life Harbour Storm in a 5 p.m. start in Berwick.
