Acadia and Axemen head coach Darren Burns announced May 27 that Kris MacDonald will be the team’s new assistant coach.

A native of Orwell, P.E.I., MacDonald played three seasons with the Axemen from 2007-2010 before finishing up his AUS hockey career with the UPEI Panthers.

UPEI also provided MacDonald a start to his coaching career when he served as an assistant with the Panthers for the 2011-2012 season.

MacDonald was named head coach of the Notre Dame College Hounds midget AAA team in Wilcox, Sask. in the fall of 2012, and remained there for two seasons. He spent this past season as an assistant with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the QMJHL.

“We are very excited to be able to add Kris to our coaching staff at Acadia,” Burns said in a May 27 release. “It’s very important for us to bring somebody here who understands the fabric of the Axemen hockey program in terms of academics, community and commitment on the ice.”

Burns described MacDonald as “a very passionate and dedicated person who has worked very hard in building his coaching resume by spending time coaching at the prestigious Notre Dame College and with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.”

Prior to coming to Acadia the first time in the fall of 2007, MacDonald played his final year of junior hockey with the Summerside Western Capitals junior A team, after having played two seasons in the Q for Acadie-Bathurst and the P.E.I. Rocket.

For his part, MacDonald is excited with the opportunity to return to Acadia. He pointed out, “Acadia’s hockey program has really taken off over the past few years under the leadership of athletic director Kevin Dickie and his staff.

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to move back to the Valley and join the Axemen coaching staff,” he said. “I’m looking forward to working with Darren, Mark (Richards) and Mike (Alcoe).”

He added, “Darren and his staff have really taken the program to another level, coming off two straight (CIS University Cup) appearances. It’s an exciting time for the program,” and an exciting time to be re-joining it.

The Axemen are scheduled to open training camp Sept. 11. Their first pre-season action will be Sept, 23 against Moncton, followed by a pair of games against the Brock Badgers Sept. 25-26.

The exhibition season will conclude with a trip south of the border, with games scheduled for Oct. 3 at Boston University and Oct. 4 at the University of Vermont.
