The Acadia hockey Axemen got their 2014-2015 AUHC regular season off to a positive start, scoring a 3-1 win over the UPEI Panthers Oct. 17 in Wolfville.

Acadia took a 2-0 lead after one period on even-strength goals by Alex Beaton (at 4:26) and Travis Gibbons (at 6:21).

Matthew Brenton got one of those goals back for UPEI in the second period, which ended with the Axemen holding on to a 2-1 advantage.

It remained 2-1 until the final minute. With UPEI goalie Mavric Parks on the bench for an extra attacker, Brett Thompson added an unassisted goal into the empty net at 19:44 to round out the scoring.

Final shots on goal were 32-31 in favour of Acadia. Neither team was able to score on the power play.

Prior to the game, Axemen captain Liam Heelis and assistant Travis Gibbons hoisted the 2013-2014 AUS championship banner to the rafters of the McCain Arena.

The Axemen are next in action Oct. 18 when they host the St. Thomas Tommies in a 7 p.m. start. Prior to that game, Acadia will unveil a banner in recognition of former Axemen player and head coach and Acadia athletic director, the late Don Wells.
