The Leafs' Oct. 17 game in Windsor was against the Glace Bay Junior Miners. The Leafs held a 2-1 advantage after the first period thanks to two power-play goals by Alex Feltmate – last season's rookie of the year for the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League. Tristan Unsworth scored for the Miners.

Glace Bay's Kenzie Dowie briefly tied the game up at 2-2 late in the second period before Peter Lister responded for a goal of his own just 40 seconds later, regaining the Leafs' lead. Colin Gillis scored what would be the game winner with 35 seconds on the clock in the second period.

Olafr Schmidt was sharp in nets for the VML as the Miners hit the Leafs fast and furious in the dying minutes of the game. Glace Bay's Unsworth managed to cut the Leafs' lead to 4-3 halfway through the third but strong defensive play on the Leafs' part kept the Cape Breton team at bay.

“A couple of veterans on our team really stepped up, especially the guys killing penalties. Gillis, (Jonathan) Hunson, and (Greg) Brown (were) blocking shots wherever necessary, taking hits and playing disciplined at the very end and getting us a win,” said Brett Fletcher, the Leafs' assistant coach following the game.

Adding to the challenge was the thick fog that blanketed the playing surface. As each period progressed, it became increasingly difficult to see both ends of the rink.

“We fought through the poor ice conditions and played well as a team,” said Fletcher.

Schmidt, who spent last season playing hockey in Germany, turned away 36 of 39 shots on goal to pick up the win. Nick Walsh was tagged with the loss. He faced 33 shots.

Assisting on goals were: Daniel Keays (with three), Craig Anderson, Mitch Normore, and Kyle Kavanagh for the Leafs, and Ryan Bursey, Shaun Neville, John Michael Walsh, Ryan Jackson, and Unsworth for the Miners.

The Leafs have a double header this coming weekend, with games on Oct. 24 and Oct. 26 against the Antigonish Bulldogs and the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates. Game time is 7:50 p.m. on Friday and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
