KENTVILLE - The Kings County Squash Club is on the lookout for more members.

The club, based in the multipurpose sports facility also housing Kentville’s soccer dome, offers membership opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels.

“We’re always looking for new members, partly just to promote healthy lifestyles,” says board member Janet MacLeod.

Squash exercises both the mind and body, MacLeod added.

“It’s a good brain activity. Some people equate it to being physical chess. You’re trying to outmaneuver your opponent, and think two or three shots in advance.”

Ten of the club’s 55 members belong to the provincial juniors’ squad, and there are several adults and children that come out to play for the sheer fun of the game.

“It’s a very supportive community for all levels,” says MacLeod, a high-performance coach and Squash Nova Scotia board member.

MacLeod would like to see 10 to 15 more adult members join the club, and she’s willing to host a free trial clinic for those interested in trying the sport.

“I would dearly love to reinstate my women's squash night. This was a weekly night where eight women would come and learn and play for 75 minutes,” said MacLeod.

“It was such fun.”

She currently runs programs for ages five to 17, with instruction available for beginners and advanced athletes.
