Fifth-year lock Ronnie Russell had the game-winning try late in the second half, allowing Acadia to overcome a 29-10 deficit.

For the X-women, who led 24-10 at halftime, it was their first home field loss since 2013. The Axewomen were also the opposition on that occasion.

Junior fly half Maddie McKenzie had two tries to lead the Acadia offence. Fifth-year scrum half Jenny Matheson, junior fullback-centre Tamara Dondi and senior lock Emma DeLory had the other Axewomen tries. Matheson added a two-point convert.

Axewomen coach Matt Durant was “really pleased with how the women responded.” With several players sick with the ’flu, he was concerned Acadia “might suffer in the second half, but the opposite was true,” as Acadia scored the final 22 points.

Hockey sweep

Fourth-year centre Mike Cazzola served notice that he will be a player to watch this season, leading the hockey Axemen to a pre-season sweep of the Brock Badgers.

In their first pre-season action, the Axemen nipped the Badgers 4-3 Sept. 25, followed by a 3-1 victory Sept. 26.

Following a scoreless opening period Sept. 25, Cazzola had both Acadia goals as the teams battled to a 2-2 tie after two periods. Newcomers Daniel Pettersson and Liam Maaskant also found the net for Acadia.

Cazzola netted two more goals Sept. 26, including scoring on Acadia’s first shot of the game for an early 1-0 lead followed by a second midway through the second period. Zach Franko had the third Acadia goal.
