“It’s definitely better,” Smith said Dec. 31 of winning the second time in a row. “We know what’s coming at nationals and it was great to make a team shot to win. Very exciting!”

Team Fay, which will represent Nova Scotia at the 2015 Canada Winter Games next month in Prince George, B.C., won its second straight provincial championship New Year’s Eve at the Lakeshore Curling Club in Lower Sackville.

Facing the Haley McCabe rink from the host club in the final, Team Fay - which also includes second Karlee Burgess and lead Janique LeBlanc - trailed 5-4 entering the ninth end, but had the all-important last rock.

After blanking the ninth end, Team Fay scored two in the 10th to earn the come-from-behind 6-5 victory.

“Provincial champs round 2,” Smith tweeted shortly after the final. “Nationals, here we come.”

Team Fay went through the five-day, eight-team tournament with a record of seven wins and one loss. Ironically, the loss came in their very first game, a 7-6 defeat at the hands of Ashley Francis in the opening draw Dec. 27.

In that game, Team Fay battled back from a 5-3 deficit after six ends to take a 6-5 lead after nine, but Francis scored twice in the tenth with the hammer for the win.

That would be the now two-time champs’ only defeat. They improved to 1-1 with a 10-1 win over Emily Ball in the noon draw Dec. 28, then topped Mandi Newhook 9-1 in the evening draw Dec. 28.

On Dec. 29, Team Fay improved to 3-1 with an 11-2 win over Kristin Clarke, and to 4-1 with a 9-2 win over Micayla Dorey in the 8 p.m. draw Dec. 29.

Two more wins followed Dec. 30, a 7-5 victory over McCabe in the 2:30 p.m. draw and a 9-6 decision over Dorey in the 8 p.m. draw.

Team Fay entered the final against McCabe needing to be beaten twice to be denied a second straight championship. As it turned out, the second game wasn’t needed.

As the provincial champions, Team Fay qualifies for the Canadian juniors set for Jan. 24 to Feb. 1 in Corner Brook, NL.
